This new ATMA recording features French music for flute and clarinet either a capella or with piano or harpsichord composed in Conservatory circles between 1921 and 1974. Each of the composers represented here Charles Koechlin, Jean Cartan, Eugène Bozza, Jean Rivier, and Florent Schmitt worked in the margins of the dominant style of the day, developing their own original musical language, or even going against the current. The language of these composers is alternately tonal, modal, or chromatic, but always has the charm and elegance for which French music is justly celebrated.
